Why Do Hedges Need To Be Trimmed?

These are some of the main benefits of periodically trimming a hedge:

Improve aesthetics: Maintaining the hedge through regular trimming results in a well-groomed and attractive hedge, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the property.

Improve shape: Regular trimming enables you to achieve and preserve the desired shape and structure of your hedge. The hedge’s shape can be an important part of the garden’s overall design and add an extra dimension to your outdoor environment.

Limit overgrowth: Regular hedge trimming plays a crucial role in preventing overgrowth, ensuring that the hedge does not take up too much space. This practice creates room for other plants, promoting a diverse landscape design. Additionally, it allows for flexibility in expanding or reorganizing outdoor areas when necessary.

Maintain health: Removing dead or diseased branches through regular trimming helps promote healthy growth and improves the overall health of your hedge. This reduces the likelihood of disease spreading to other parts of your garden.

Fewer pests: Regular hedge trimming helps eliminate hiding places for animals like rats, mice, and foxes. This reduction in potential hiding spots contributes to a garden that is both healthier and more secure.

Increase sunlight: Trimming ensures that other plants in the outdoor area can also get sunlight. This is important for promoting the health and growth of your other plants.

Hvorfor Bør Man Trimme Hekker

Improve views: Regular hedge trimming is important for keeping the growth of hedges in check. This practice opens up views and contributes to a more organized and visually appealing outdoor area.

Increase privacy: A well-maintained hedge can act as a privacy screen, making your space calmer and more serene.

Increase functionality: A hedge that’s properly maintained makes your outdoor area more functional and easier to navigate. Instead of being an obstacle, it provides easy access to flower beds, paths, and other garden features.

Prevent diseases: A regularly trimmed hedge reduces the chances of harmful infections spreading to other plants, helping to keep the rest of the garden healthy.

More flowers: Trimming a hedge can cause it to increase its flower production, giving you a more vibrant outdoor atmosphere.

Longer lifespan: Regular trimming can enhance the lifespan of a hedge. The trimming helps to prevent overgrowth, diseases, and other factors that can decrease the hedge’s longevity.

It is best not to trim more than 25% of a hedge’s branches, as it can negatively impact its health. Additionally, keep in mind that different types of hedges might need a different approach or be trimmed at a different time.

At What Time Of The Year Should Hedges Be Trimmed?

In the UK, the optimal time for hedge trimming is generally late winter or early spring, usually between late February and early March. This timing is ideal for several reasons:

Rimelig og topp kvalitet hekk trimming

Dormancy period: During winter, many hedges are either in a dormant or semi-dormant state. While dormant, plants are not growing and are therefore significantly less stressed by pruning activities.

Pathogen’s dormancy period: Many insects, fungi, and pathogens are also dormant during the winter. This means that they are less likely to attack the hedge.

Bird’s nesting: In the UK, there are strict regulations in place to protect nesting birds, and the bird nesting season begins in early spring. Trimming hedges before the nesting season starts ensures that the task is completed before birds begin building their nests.

Increased growth: Pruning just before plants start their active growing phases helps to stimulate robust new growth. This can create a hedge that is significantly denser and healthier.

Optimal visibility: Deciduous hedges shed their leaves in late winter, which allows a better view of the hedge’s structure. This makes it easier to identify diseases, pests, damaged branches, or other potential issues.

Favourable weather: Late winter often has better weather conditions, which helps with pruning. The climate is usually milder than in the harsher winter months, making the gardener’s work easier.

What about trimming during other seasons?

While the main trimming for most hedges is typically done in the winter, there are cases where additional trimming during the summer or fall can be appropriate.

Here are the primary reasons why trimming more than once a year can be helpful:

Trimme hekker om vinteren

To remove branches that are damaged or diseased.

To improve how the hedge looks once its branches and leaves have grown out.

To increase air circulation and improve sunlight penetration

To reduce the size of hedges that have become overgrown.

Most hedges should be trimmed once a year, but there are a few types that benefit from more frequent trimming:

Deciduous hedges: Fast-growing deciduous hedges like beech and pivet often need to be trimmed in both early spring and late summer. This helps them maintain their shape throughout their growing period.

Formal hedges: Formal hedges, particularly those requiring meticulous trimming for aesthetic purposes or to maintain a specific shape, may benefit from being trimmed twice or more a year. This is especially applicable for hedges designed in geometric shapes or to uphold precise garden structures.

Coniferous hedges: Certain conifers, such as thuja or juniper, tolerate frequent pruning well. Trimming these coniferous hedges in both spring and late summer can contribute to keeping them compact and healthy.

It is crucial to adapt the trimming schedule of your hedge to the specific requirements of the hedge type and the climate in your area. If you are uncertain about how often to trim your hedge or require assistance, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

How Do We Trim Hedges?

Because hedges are designed to provide privacy, it’s important that they are as dense as possible from top to bottom. In most cases, the top of a hedge should also be slightly narrower than the bottom. This shape gives the lower branches enough sunlight to grow and fill out the hedge’s body.

In order to make sure that the hedge is straight, we typically set up guide strings to use as reference points. These strings are then attached to stakes, which are inserted into the ground at the ends of the hedge rows. This helps guide us as we trim the hedge.

Typically, a string at the top and bottom of each side of the hedge (4 strings in total) is enough to guide us. Although, when trimming very tall hedges, a third string can be useful.

Our standard approach begins with trimming the top of the hedge to create a smooth and straight surface. Next, we trim the sides to align with the guide strings as evenly as possible. We often utilize both manual hedge shears and motorized saws to help us achieve optimal results.

The final step involves trimming the ends of the hedge.

While this is our standard method for hedge trimming, it might change depending on the type or shape of hedge that you have.

Trimming typically encourages the hedge to respond with new and vigorous growth. To support this, we recommend a gentle fertilization using compost or slow-release fertilizer. Adequate watering is also advised to promote new growth and enhance nutrient absorption.

Hedge Removal In Wigan

Do you need help to remove a hedge?

If you’re considering hedge removal due to overgrowth, disease, or to make room for new landscaping, our experienced team is ready to assist you.

There are various reasons why customers opt for hedge removal. It could be due to the hedge aging, losing its shape, facing health issues like disease or pest infestations, or simply creating space for new landscaping projects.

Before starting with the hedge removal, we always make sure to check for cables, water pipes, or anything else in the ground where the hedge is planted. This helps to ensure that no infrastructure is damaged.

The removal process usually starts with cutting down the hedge until only the roots remain. If not removed, the roots may continue to grow. Extraction of the roots is particularly important if you plan to plant a new hedge or create a lawn, in order to avoid getting new shoots of the old hedge.

We usually use machinery like stump removers and mini excavators to thoroughly extract all the roots.

Once the hedge removal is complete, we take care to collect and dispose of all waste in an environmentally friendly manner, ensuring proper delivery to an appropriate disposal facility.

How Much Does Hedge Trimming Cost In Wigan?

These are the main factors that influence the price of hedge trimming:

Hedge size: The bigger the hedge is, the more expensive it will be to prune. For example, a 70 cm tall hedge takes much less time to prune than one that is 150 cm tall.

Extent: The price will be impacted by whether or not you want us to trim both sides, or do additional work like lowering the top of the hedge.

Hedge health: If the hedge is infected by insects or fungi, it might cost more as the job will be more complex and require more stringent safety measures.

Hedge type: A hedge made up of small, delicate leaves will take longer to prune than a hedge of robust evergreen needles.

Accessibility: If we can easily access the hedge with our machines and personnel, we can keep the price lower.

Hedge condition: If the hedge is overgrown and unmaintained, it will cost more to prune than one that is healthy and easy to work with.

Hedge shape: If you have special requirements for the shape of the hedge, for example a topiary, the cost will be higher. This is because it requires both more skill and time to create intricate shapes.

Depending on the factors above, these are our prices for hedge trimming:

Hedge Length Price (£)
5 metres 75 – 200
10 metres 100 – 300
15 metres 200 – 400
20 metres 300 – 500
25 metres 400 – 600
30 metres 500 – 700

However, each job is unique. Therefore, there may be specific circumstances about your job that may impact the final cost. The prices above are therefore intended to be indicative.
