In the UK, the optimal time to cut hedges is late winter or early spring, usually between late February and early March. This timing is ideal for several reasons:
Dormancy period: During winter, most hedges are either in a dormant or semi-dormant state. While dormant, plants are not growing and are therefore significantly less stressed by pruning.

How Do We Trim Hedges?
Because hedges are designed to provide privacy, it’s important that they are as dense as possible from top to bottom. In most cases, the top of a hedge should also be slightly narrower than the bottom. This shape gives the lower branches enough sunlight to grow, and also fills out the hedge’s body.
In order to make sure that the hedge is straight, we typically set up guide strings to use as reference points. We attach the strings to stakes, which are inserted into the ground at the ends of the hedge rows. This helps guide us as we do the cutting.
Typically, a string at the top and bottom of each side of the hedge (4 strings in total) is enough to guide us. Although, when trimming very tall hedges, a third string can be useful.
Our standard approach is to trim the top to create a smooth and straight surface. Next, we cut the sides to align with the guide strings as evenly as possible. We often utilise both manual hedge shears and motorised saws to help us achieve optimal results.
The final step is to cut the ends of the hedge.
While this is our standard method for trimming, it might change depending on the type or shape of hedge you have.
Trimming typically encourages the hedge to respond with new and vigorous growth. This is a good time to give it nutrients. We recommend a gentle fertilisation with compost or slow-release fertilizer. We also recommend watering to support this new growth and enhance nutrient absorption.
